A Visit with Essie

Yesterday my mom and I took Lena to visit my Great-Great Aunt Essie who is going to be 103 years old next month. We had a nice visit with her that included the usual old people gossip that goes around in circles until you can no longer understand who is being talked about or how you ended up on the current subject.

I wanted to get a good picture of the three of us but it was pretty much doomed from the start because:
1) I forgot the regular camera
2) my mom is incapable of taking pictures with an iphone without making them blurry
3) take a look at the second picture and you'll see what Lena did less than 5 seconds after each picture was taken

After we gave up were done taking pictures, I showed them to Essie and she said, "Oh, they're good!" Then she suddenly sucked in a breath and said, "I should have covered up my knees!!!" Still plenty of modesty at the age of 102.

Old people seem to be incredibly fascinated with babies. Lena was a hit as all of them remarked about her rosy cheeks and beautiful blue eyes. The cheeks were rosy because it was about 85 degrees in there!

As we were leaving, there was a mass exodus from the bedrooms, as it was lunch time. One man walked out in front of us and Essie gestured to him and explained, "That's Miles. He is not too swift. Well, he is in his 90's {silently implying age has something to do with his lack of wit, when she is over 100 and still sharp as ever}. BUT, he is a good Christian man {gotta throw in the positive too, you know}. This was all said when we were definitely within Mile's earshot, so hopefully Miles is also hard of hearing and didn't hear what Essie really thinks of him!
